My favorite thing about Merrell shoes is the wide toebox – these did not disappoint! In fact, these shoes were very comfortable right out of the box. I think they are a very good-looking shoe and they feel well-made. I’ve included pictures/links to several male and several female versions of the shoe.
The shoes have about a 7mm drop and the men’s size 10 weighed in at 10.6 ounces on my scale (this is somewhat notable because Merrell lists them at 9.3 ounces).
The length of the shoe was normal but I think they were a tiny bit wide in the heel area. I didn’t think they were too wide but there might be a little bit of slipping.
The shoes have a very rugged outsole, which is a good thing on the trails! However, I think it made them a little stiff. Personally, I prefer a little bit more flexibility between the midfoot and forefoot.
These shoes have a badass tread! I think they are best-suited for soft trails and mud. However, they would probably do well on other types of trails too. I think they would definitely feel a bit firm on pavement.
If I were looking for a hiking/outdoors shoe, this would be it! I would get them in a second. However, for running, they are not my top choice. I think they are a little too stiff, and at 10.6 ounces, I think they are caught between being a racer and being a trainer.
– wide toebox
– comfortable feel
– great tread
– a little stiff
– at 10.6 ounces, I think they’re a little heavy for racing
– a little pricey at $120 (Merrell website)
