The Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence Ten-Day Race

"There is only one perfect road, and that road is ahead of you, always ahead of you." - Sri Chinmoy

“There is only one perfect road, and that road is ahead of you, always ahead of you.” – Sri Chinmoy

Sri Chinmoy moved to New York City in 1964 and established a meditation center in Queens. At various times, Chinmoy advised musicians Carlos Santana and Roberta Flack, as well as runner Carl Lewis.

Chinmoy practiced “self-transcendence” – expanding one’s consciousness to overcome the mind’s perceived limitations. He encouraged a balanced lifestyle and practiced sports not only for joy and to stay fit, but also because he felt that that the pursuit of physical fitness and the regular practice of sports provide key vehicles for personal growth.

With that being said, yesterday was the final day of the Sri Chinmoy Self Transcendence Ten-Day Race in Queens. The course is a very flat, scenic, one-mile loop (Certification Code NY11008JG) in a pleasant park setting near the famous areas of the World’s Fair of 1964.

In 2001, at the age of 82, the legendary Ted Corbitt completed 303 miles over the course of six days.

What is the most you have ever run over a six-day period? A ten-day period?

Would you ever try a 12-hour run? 24-hour run? Six-day run? Ten-day run?

  1. They don’t run 24 hours for 10 days do they?
I’m thinking of running a 12-hour ultra this summer. It’s called the Ultra Around the Lake in Wakefield, MA on July 25th. I guess these time as opposed to distance races are rare. They get people from all over the country and Canada to this race.
