The Tarawera Ultramarathon is this weekend, and as far as I can tell, it’s a beautiful race. I’ve never gone to a race specifically for the scenery, but there are some really amazing places out there. I’ve included a few below that came right to mind:

Western States Endurance Run

Western States Endurance Run

Western States travels from Squaw Valley to Auburn, CA.

Pikes Peak Ascent

Pikes Peak Ascent

The Pikes Peak Ascent starts in Manitou Springs and runs up to the summit of Pikes Peak.

The Hardrock 100 is in Silverton, CO, and is known as one of the toughest races there is. There is nearly 68,000 feet of total elevation change!

Equinox Marathon

Equinox Marathon is in Fairbanks, AK, and is held during the autumn equinox.

Big Sur

Big Sur

Big Sur is home to many great races including the Big Sur International Marathon.

Of course, I have to include UTMB, which I hope to run someday.

Finally, I will acknowledge that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Maybe the best scenery isn’t the redwoods in New Zealand or the mountain peaks in the Alps. Maybe it’s the crowds waiting for you to make the turn onto First Avenue:

NYC Marathon

Maybe it’s even an ugly old sign:

Boston Marathon

What is the most scenic race that you’ve done?

I’ve sadly not done anything scenic, except maybe the trail race I did but it’s practically in my backyard so it didn’t feel too exotic 😉 I’d love to do something in the canyons of CO or UT or the CIM. And several international races of course, maybe Prague or something in Africa 🙂

  2. I’d love to run NY and Boston, although this post is not making them seem that appealing anymore!

That Citgo sign may be ugly, but it was the most beautiful thing in my eyes when I finally saw it and knew the end was near. I love trail races and the ones you talk about look amazing! There is a 20km trail run in a small small town about 6 hours from where I live and it is just spectacular!

I’ve always wanted to run the London Marathon, but have yet to be accepted via their lottery system. I ran a half marathon at OBX, NC last year that was really nice!

    Wow, beautiful!!!! Gorgeous!!! 🙂

  6. That’s a great list! Personally, I’m actually finding it quite difficult to decide on the single most beautiful race I’ve ever run… I’ve loved the trail races around Balmoral, here in Scotland – it’s hardly surprising that this is where the Queen has her holiday home, it’s just so beautiful up there. I’m running the Rome Marathon next weekend, which is said to pass 220 landmarks, so I think that’ll be high on my list as well! 😀

  7. The Nike women’s half or NYC are probably the most scenic races I’ve done…I would have counted my treadmill races but maybe next time.

The Richmond (Va.) Marathon is surprisingly gorgeous for a road race. Stately, historic neighborhoods and a winding several miles along the James River. Great race overall.
