I started running in middle school. If I remember correctly, my 400m time was somewhere around 80 seconds and my 800m time was over three minutes. My sport had always been swimming and the transition to running wasn’t pretty. Nevertheless, I stuck with it (mostly because I wasn’t good at any other sports). I got much better my junior year of high school and continued to progress throughout my senior year. The more significant thing, looking back now, is that I was hooked. What started with local 5ks (the Coyote 5k and Twilight Run were my favorites), turned into 10ks, then 10 milers, then half marathons, then marathons, then a 50k… and now, who knows what is next?! There have been bumps in the road – injuries, burnout, plateaus – but I’m glad I’ve stuck with it.
