This morning, Meb Keflezighi won the US Half Marathon Championship with a time of 1:01:23. That is approximately 4:41/mile. Meb is 38 years old.
Several months ago, Haile Gebrselassie came in 3rd at the Bupa Great North Run with a time of 1:00:41. The Great North Run has some elevation loss; however, Gebrselassie’s time is the fastest half marathon ever for someone over 40.
These times aren’t just impressive because Meb and Geb (sorry, I had to) are “older” runners. These times would be extremely impressive at any age.
Nobody over 40 has won an Olympic medal in the marathon – will that change in Rio?
