Kenenisa Bekele is only 31 years old but he has an astounding running resume. It includes 11 gold medals at World Cross Country Championships, 5 gold medals at World Championships (outdoor T&F) and 3 gold medals at the Olympics. He is the current holder of the Olympic Record and World Record at both 5,000m and 10,000m.
The only question is: why isn’t Bekele ranked higher?
I placed him sixth for the following two reasons:
1) he has been hampered by injuries for the last several years and has yet to consistently perform again
2) he has yet to transition to the marathon and show whether or not he can be as dominant at the longer distance
With that being said, if Kenenisa becomes as dominant at the marathon distance as he has been at 5,000m and 10,000m on the track, he could make a legitimate case that he is the greatest of all-time.
